Actually, it start out life as "Nasl", which was an acronym for "Not Another Scripting Language". There wasn't much purpose behind that name either, but it was reasonably descriptive. And similar thinking had led earlier to YASim, which has done relatively well as names go. But alas, it wasn't to be. It turns out that the Nessus network security project (www.nessus.com) have had their own "Nessus Attack Script Language" for several years. The world just isn't big enough for two NASLs, unfortunately.* They emailed me just days after I had posted to Freshmeat. [* Yeah, right. Like I was going to fight this and make enemies of a whole project full of network security experts.] Anyway, at that point I was too lazy to go through the code to change the naXXX's to something else. Calling it "Nasal" got me out of trouble with the scary white hats and allowed me to keep the pronunciation and the C prefix. Jon S. Bertdt wrote: > I just want to know: why "nasal"? Like I said.
