I flew down to Philadelphia from Ottawa today, though unbelievably favourable conditions: the trip is almost due N->S, and since the low that dumped all the snow has moved east, I had ferocious tailwinds at altitude from the retreating side of the system. I throttled back to 65% power (and sometimes even lower), but I still saw typical groundspeeds of 155 kt (for 110 kt TAS), and at one point, my cruise groundspeed hit 173 kt! That gave me tailwinds of 45-63 kt. The whole trip took 2:30 for well over 300 nm, and I burned only 20 gallons of fuel in total (less than I would have driving).

It was also my first flight with my new Garmin 196. I did let it distract me a couple of times (i.e. I drifted 100 ft off altitude), but after a while I worked it into my scan OK. What a great device! People could learn a lot about consumer electronics and interface design by studying it.

I'm not sure whether to hope for tailwinds on the way home or not -- strong winds from the south would almost certain mean that I'm on the edge of a strong low that is moving towards me (rather than away from me, as it was today).

All the best,

David
