Compaq has been doing it the longest. We've been using their stuff since they
bought DEC a few years ago (DEC was the only 24/7 hardware support in this
part of Maine). And of course it is really all HP now :-) The compaq
desktops are what HP calls "business desktops". Those are the ones you can
order with Mandrake. They still sell the "consumer" HP Pavilions and Compaq
Presarios, but you probably wouldn't want one of those even if they did come
with linux. I think in general their prices are a little higher than
Dell...but the quality is very good. And the service people don't give you
that glazed eyed deer in the headlights look when you tell them the machine is
running linux.

There is also a company called Indigo Computer and of course walmart.com and
one other company that I can't remember the name of (maybe in Canada?). I
don't have any experience with those, but from what I understand you want to
avoid Lindows, unless you like paying a lot of money for free software. Some,
but not all, of Walmart's stuff comes with Lindows.

Dell has a long history of supporting and dropping different operating
systems, but I would say it is very likely that HP will give you support until
you're ready to donate the PC to the local homeless shelter.

Best,

Jim
