Can anyone point me in the right direction for some documentation on the relevant protocols for "driving" FlightGear from an external app?

We're involved with UAV control using the PICCOLO autopilot system (www.cloudcaptech.org). On their site they provide a FlightGear download and they're able to drive it using their hardware-in-the-loop simulation system, via the below options:

--native-fdm=socket,in,30,,5500,udp --fdm=external

We'd like to also drive it directly from our app while the UAV is in the air and we're getting actual data back. I posted this on the users list, but then thought it might be more appropriately directed to this list as its a development issue.
