Of course, I would never recommend to fly a VFR circuit pattern in real IMC, only based on Flight Gear display...
I agree with Jonathan, it would just be suicidal.
I just say that flying an IFR approach (NDB, VOR, VOR DME, LOC, LOC DME, ILS, ILS DME, GPS, or whatever the published IFR approach is) with a VMC synthetic environment displayed somewhere in the cockpit (on a tablet PC or a computer laptop for better details), would greatly improve situational awareness.
The Xsens AHRS/IMU is "only" around USD 2K.
I think a lot of Experimental or private A/C owners would really enjoy having the FG synthetic environment.
