Have pity on me; I'm new to this stuff.
As I get it now, the textures applied to 3D models are specified in the .ac file (or .3ds file or whatever). This, in turn, means that if you want a different paint job for the Cessna, or different airline's livery for the 737, you need a different .ac file. And since the .ac model is uniquely specified in the .xml file for the model, which in turn is uniquely specified in the .xml file for the aircraft as a whole, a different paint job/livery effectively means a new aircraft. Is this right?
NO.If you want to change the skin on the model all you need to do is repaint the texture like in MSFS.The only thing is the name of the texture must remain the same just like in MSFS.As far as I can see you could have a folder in say the 737 folder with a hundred skins in it and just put the skin you wanted at the time in the models folder in the A/C you wanted to use. If you want to try this put the original texture for the 737 somewhere safe then put a copy in a photo editor and do with it what you like then put it back and run the sim your new design should appear.Just be sure to put the original somewhere safe. The texture file name is coded into the .AC file by the AC3D program at the time the model is created. The only way to change that is to open the model up again in AC3D and change the texture name. You can have as many textures as you like for one model but each surface(sub part of the total model)can only have one texture mapped to it. So you dont need 10 copies of the 737 just the one with ten different textures which have the same name. HTH
