Yes, this option only works with 2d panels. If you want to use FG as a visualization tool you could create a panel-less aircraft (or use) an aircraft with only a 2d panel and disable it.
What's the meaning of the following error (I sometimes get this with an external FDM):
Error: base = 0,-1490.92 course = 5.08137 dist = 1.27882e+07
This is coming from the cloud movement code I believe and is generated when the time step goes so fast that the clouds movement code can't resolve the difference between the current and previous position.
