That's a good question. I found on airliners.net some comments about simulator attempts to fly it in, but that the desicion was made in favor of land (well water) transport eventually. Also, apparently the aircraft was retired on November 17, 2003 without any major incidents and it was orriginally planned to ship it to EHLE last summer already.
So, I guess that runway length was in the end a major argument of deciding against air transportation, due to safety regulations. Another possibility (hinted at on airliners.net) is that the aircraft was stripped of servicable parts to be used on the ramaining 747 classics. I actually saw quite a bit of the route through the city. Coincidently, the route more or less conincided with my daily bicycle route between home and work. It was a pretty spectacular sight. I expect some pictures of the city leg of the route will be on airliners.net soon.
