That may well be, but plib uncompresses them anyway and lets ssgMakeMipMaps run over the data. Compression and even different image formats shouldn't make a difference after that.
Although I'm still convinced that RLE in texture memory is supported (but i can't find any reference to it right now), removing unnecessary channels _will_ reduce the use of texture memory.
