I wrote that part, and it doesn't look as if it were wrong (see globals.cxx:135).
The dirs and subdirs are only added to the list, if ulOpenDir() (see ul.cxx:64)
doesn't return NULL for them.
Any chance you can get us a gdb backtrace?
