They appear to have moved it into its own library now, libalut.so, which matches how it is delivered on windows. My checkout tree has an alut directory at the top level, with its own autogen.sh/configure setup. It appears to build cleanly, although it doesn't properly respect configure's --prefix option (it can't find the openal headers when they aren't installed system-wide; you have to set C_INCLUDE_PATH to get around that).
