GCC 4.0.1 is the default in Debian Testing and therefore gets picked up when you run the ordinary build scripting associated with CVS. It seems to work fine; there have been a few patches submitted by various people (over many months) for the 3->4 migration. I will say that it's a good idea to do a "make clean" after you transition your toolchain from gcc3 to gcc4. Otherwise some odd things happen.
