I meant version as in version number.

Perhaps a command line parameter could be added to display the version
of the binary and the version of the fg_root data.

It has become a standard for GNU applications to have a --version command
line option by which the application only prints version number, compile
options etc to stdout and exits; useful information to include in bug
reports...
