I have looked at wings3d, blender, and ac3d and from the documentation,
I think I will make faster progress on the 3d model with ac3d. Do the
experienced 3d modelers on the list agree with this choice?
I am far from recommending one over the other. I used AC3D for my PA34 Model.
It is my first-time-ever 3d model and I found AC3D very easy to use, once I
got the idea of 3d modeling. I tried blender for a couple of 5 minute
sessions and gave up, but I think it is more powerful (what usually means
more complex). I will give it another try oneday.
For using AC3D I got a lot of help from this page:

Some downloadable videos showing the aircraft creating process.
Have fun, Torsten

I use Blender for all my modelling .... but it took a while to get the
hang of Blender. What really helped get me started was this: Right click
on the borders of the Blender , you'll see "split area".
Create 4 panes and set set each view to "top" , "side" "front" "camera"
.... it gives it the look of most 3d modellers. I usually model using
only "spacebar" (add object) , "s" (scale ), "g" move , "b" select,"f"
(face select mode for texturing) and TAB (vertex edit mode). Splitting
the windows into 4 views finally got me going .Hope this helps someone
else ... I enjoy seeing new aircraft. Cheers.
