There is Python/VPython/IDLE and customers told me they are happy using
it at least for applications that don't have too complicated a GUI.

I mostly know Java and Python from the system 'designer's point of view
and I can assure that Java is close to a nightmare for administrators.
This is why almost every vendor/supplier ships Java runtimes for
different platforms with their applications.
So people would at least make _me_ happy if they avoid Java  :-)
