I've looked at the documentation of flightgear and I've found of particular interest for my work the section relative to the configuration of the autopilot.I didn't enter on the details yet but just to have an idea I wanted to ask if,in your opinion, would it be possible to create a my own flight software,in C++ for example,as a particular outpilot configuration, and make it work with the airplane model by the xml interface. And another question : as we are tring to develop this exsperimental work, would it be possible,in your opinion,on the optimistic hypothesis that our work function correctly, to create a particular autonomous airplane model to add to the flightgear simulator?
I'm still out of town so don't have a lot of time to reply, but there are several things that are possible in FG.
1. create an autopilot config for your aircraft in FG. Then you could port our PID code to your flight controller and have starting point for the gains.
2. using FG's ability to send flightdata out via a network socket (i.e. sensor inputs) and receive control inputs from from an outside source (also via network) it is possible to connect up your actual flight computer (assuming it has some sort of network support.) You could exercise much of your flight computer code on the bench with FG providing sensor input, modeling your airplane and receiving flight control inputs from your actual flight computer.
We are happy to accept aircraft donations. I think UAVwork is one area where FlightGear could provide a huge service, so more UAV's would be a great thing for our project.
