I didn't compare the shorelines of the whole world between old and new version :-) I actually had a look at a few places (my personal favourites) and noticed something that appeared to me as more detail in the GSHS 1.3 (new) data. Unfortunately I did _not_ look at the great lakes area. What is nice about the new GSHHS is that they don't put everything into one dataset but instead they separate the coastline from lakes (and islands and ponds on islands). I my eyes this _should_ make it easier to pick GSHHS for coastlines and VMAP0 for everything else.
