A change that large (13 knots!!) is a major wind shear.

Might it make sense to provide some sort of filtering or extrapolation

I also find it extremely annoying.

I had just finished installing an auto-throttle capability in the sim and feeling pretty good about how the takeoff and climb were proceeding when the throttles violently and suddenly rolled back and reduced power. Guess I had noticed the a/s speed jumps in the past but this was the first time there was a physical event associated with the weather update. There were several such events during the cruise to Albuquerque and they were disconcerting.

I do think the real-weather feature is an excellent addition. In fact, an amusing antecdote --- at Scale4x we enabled the feature at the morning start and were presented with a blank grey OTW view on the screen. Walked outside (we were located at LAX) and sure enough the coastal fog was laid in nice and thick and low. We had to turn the weather off so folks could see the scenery and pick out local landmarks and terrain features :-)

This also relates to the "why does my aircraft jerk suddenly" question that we get occasionly. Some people like to think that it is some sort of turbulence, but the not-very-well-thought-out weather simulation routine is the most likely suspect.

As John said, instead of relying on just one set of data from a single
station, it might make sense to take data from all the surrounding stations and perform some extrapolation.

Or perhaps save the current value before updating and "blend" the new value with the previous over, say a 5 minute period.
