Does anyone else run FGFS on a 32MB video card? I'd be suspicious that's not
really enough (not with the high res textures, anyway). My old 440MX 64Mb
card is only just about enough to usably run FlightGear, and the plib texture
compression patch is almost essential to use the carrier etc.
I used to use a nVidia GeForce2 400MX/32MB with FlightGear CVS up until
about 2 month ago. With the plib texture compression patch it ran
decently on my Athlon XP 1600 (1.3GHz) PC. Make sure to rename the
Textures.high directory so the low resolution textures are used and
switch off all AI aircraft. I could use the carrier, though. If the
texture memory overflows the frame rate will drop to 1-5 fps or worse.
The new ground textures and new scenery objects might have increased the
total amount of textures since then - but OTOH the texture handling has
been improved too (e.g. by avoiding loading the same texture multiple
times). Also don't use too high screen resolution/window size, in
1600x1200 FlightGear would just hang on my computer, while 1024x768 worked
nicely.
Last, with my new gfx card, a nVidia 6600 LE, my old (4.5 years) PC can
easily run FlightGear at 1600x1200 or even manage to run 2 instances of
FGFS concurrently in a dual head setup at almost 20fps each (at 1024x768).
Sadly, it can't quite handle the new south Germany scenery satisfactorily,
though.
