It looks like Inkscape needs to fit the whole image data into physical memory. It loads a little more of the file if I log into X without KDE, just some xterms, but it still crashes with a std::bad_alloc message when it has processed about 80%.

I have slimmed down the SVG somewhat by removing the font definitions, bitmap images, text, and the red hatching with a text editor and grep. While the file is now "only" 13.5 MB in size, Inkscape still cannot load the whole thing.

Maybe I should try to throw out more elements, based on their color? Or simply buy more RAM? :-)
