Hi Dave Culp, as you are (one? of) the author/creator of the FG version of the Schweizer SGS 2-23 sailplane and the thermal AI functions I would be very thankful if you could answer some of my questions:
I have created a small glider-field as part of a bigger project, therfore I made some landings with the FlightGear Schweizer SGS 2-33 to stay authentic. http://home.arcor.de/vollnhals-bremen/Soaring/fgfs-screen-007001.jpg http://home.arcor.de/vollnhals-bremen/Soaring/fgfs-screen-010002.jpg Problem Nr 1: Later I tried to create and use some AI-thermals but with some unexpected difficulties. Although I read the AI_doc.html I should better had studied it because I overlooked that "the entries can be overridden by an aircraft's **-set.xml* file". At the end I had a look at the sgs233-set.xml and found the (unwished) preset and ai passages. After deleting them I can now use the normal AI way with enabeling an AI-scenerio in the preferences.xml and giving the other parameter with the commandline (indeed I use my FGTools). This long speech just to explaining you where the problem might be also for any other user with the actual SGS 2-33 configuration: To use other scenarios than the preset one you have to a) edit the sgs233-set.xml file OR b) cut the unwished parts out of it. This both is very uncomfortable except for those who want to use the glider only with the preset sceneraio (KFSO). After my opinion, we should give add another different sgs233-set.xml files to the Schweizer - one without the presets (call it 233-set.xml.normal) and a readme file where the differences are explained: "rename sgs233.xml.normal to ... when you want to use other thermal AI scenerios as the default one ...". Problem Nr 2: I could not see any differences in speed and altitute loss when I tried to set the spoilers with the keyboard "k" or release them with "j". Is this broken? Problem Nr 3: The 3d aircraft is not visible from inside. So when you look around for the thermal cap (or want to fix a point at the earth over the downwing when having catched the thermal upwind successfully) you have no reference. I know pretty well that it is only a 2d-panel and I can live with this but is it a big problem to display the 3D a/c model from inside (naturally with the 2d display only at one view-point like other a/c have it). Problem Nr 4: The windshield yaw-string moves only a little in normal flight, even heavily uncoordinated one. After the Schweizer is on the ground without movement it indicates the actual wind-direction (not proofed). I would expect some more visible movement ie in slip movement. Thank you very much for your answer. But as you see, I just (re-)discovered virtual soaring once again, it is much fun with the right scenario.
