      Update: I get a can't call glutSetCursor without calling glutInit 
error. Got and built freeglut and it does call glutInit and sets the 
Initialised member, which then show up unset when glutSetCursor is 
called, ergo memory corruption. It doesn't happen when I set a 
watchpoint in gdb, so I'm back to valgrind.

BTW, I've been keeping the sources uptodate on the faint hope that 
someone else will kill it off before I find it.
