I added another captcha to the registration page ... maybe this will help
slow down some of the less sophisticated bots.

This has one curcial weakness: you can have only a limited amount of
picture/word combinations as the pictures cannot be auto-generated. Of
course one can distort the images a little (as shown on the pwntcha
site, that Joacim linked to and that I meant in my first mail on this
subject), but even then it should be possible to match them to the
originals, for example by comparing color distributions.
But to get back to practical things to do now: I got the impression,
that phpBB has different sets of captchas. Changing it to anything else
should be better than now.
