When I run js_demo, I get a number from -1.0 to 0.0 to 1.0
Where is this level of precision set?

I had no dead-band set in my joystick-name-here-or-js0.xml

Nick, can you find which joystick.xml file it is using? Perhaps looking thru 
it will help.
I don't think I can be of further help here.
