I don't run debian - I have however just grabbed their patch to the original source, which appears to hack in autoconf support, and the ability to build shared libs (I hope it's not the same hack used to build shared plib & simgear libs). The compressed patch is the same size as the compressed source code, so it appears to be fairly weighty.
