The thing is, you do fly the J3 cub solo from the back seat for weight-and-balance reasons, so it definitely should be the default. Apparently, it really is that hard to see the instruments in a Cub, but fortunately, you don't use them much in a plane like that. You can move the pilot view position forward if you want using the mouse (that applies to any plane) -- go into mouse view mode, and hold down the middle mouse button and CTRL on the keyboard, then slide the mouse forward. Note that Microsoft Flight Simulator X, which now also comes with a J3 Cub (I think we were first), starts you in the back seat as well.
