If you were on IRC, I'd tell you to read flightgear-devel :) The DISPLAY problem is caused by new code in FG that checks the display variable and bug in OSG, fixed in OSG SVN. The slow scenery loading is caused by switching to the OSG DatabasePager, plus some problems in OSG that are fixed in OSG 2.3.
