FWIW, it looks like a recent code change is causing or uncovering the problem: I tried the current data directory in combination with source code version of 1.9.0, and FlightGear/SimGear snapshots of Feb 1st, and March 1st. All three worked without problems, so it must be a code change from the first week of March that must be involved. I hope to narrow down the date a bit further by doing a few more test runs.
