For what it's worth, I ended up with a refurb compaq (now hp?) presario
laptop with nvidia graphics hardware. It has a dual 64-bit AMD processor
and so far I have been really happy with it. Everything (sound, video,
wireless network, etc.) is well supported under Linux. And it performs
pretty decently. I got it from a place called MEI (Micro Center) which is a
pretty interesting place if you have one in your town and haven't checked it
out yet. For myself, the key thing is nvidia hardware. I can live without
sound, and I can plug in an external wireless device if I have to, but for
me, fast, solid 3d video (for FlightGear) is the most important factor.

I should point out that with Fedora 12, working around the neauvou
open-source video drivers which get hardwired in at a very low level was a
trick to figure out. I actually needed to add a kernel boot parameter to
disable them because they actually get pulled in at the start of the boot,
before the kernel even loads I think so that the system can do fancy boot
graphics ... looks pretty but then they prevent the real nvidia kernel
module from loading/working later.

Regards,

Curt.
