In case there is any lingering doubt that Flightgear can't deal with
horizon curvature at high altitude:

http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=14844

(taking the X-15 to 270.000 ft)

Done with recent Local Weather (which, as I discovered, is fine with Mach
6) and Terrain Haze shader, LOD bare range is 150 km, max. visibility is
limited to 120 km (something culls the terrain when I try to get a bit
more...but I'd probably run out of memory at some point anyway), frame
rate was consistently between 20 and 25.

No cheats or readjustments of the shader parameters - the whole change in
the sky and horizon is seamless from the ground all the way up to 270.000
ft.
