Thanks for the tip: mesa-4.0.1 did the trick. But now it looks like I've got to give it up as my frame rates are, at best, 7-9 frames/s with very modest settings in 640x480 mode. Looks like my hardware, -athlon 700 -matrox g400/16mb -rh7.0 lacks a bit in performance.
