I tried that and used the chmod +x command on it which appeared to change
the mode but then I get "bus error" when I tried to start it from the
command line.

This is supposed to use the .fgfsrc file isn't it? I tried to start it
using ./fgfs-0.8.0-09.24.02 (from inside the same directory)

and /fgfs-0.8.0-09.24.02 --fg-root=./FlightGear/
