To do it properly, we should just change the temperature of the intake air by some function of the exhaust temperature. By heating (and thinning out) the air, carb heat makes the engine run richer, and there are situations where that will actually give a power increase (i.e. when you're running lean of best-power mixture). It would be nice if all of that could fall out naturally.
