I do have an rpm-based flightgear v0.92? (how do I check the version number?) in a different directory tree, which is working fine. I guess it was a binary, but I don't know for sure.
To find if you have a rpm file instaled run:
$ rpm -qa | grep flightgear (you could replace "flightgear" with some part of the name, like "gear" or "flight")
Use # rpm -e name_of_your package to remove it.
When I downloaded the latest cvs FlightGear, I also downloaded and compiled plib from the cvs and make installed it, so shouldn't the older libs have been overwritten?
Not necessarily, if you have installed plib from an rpm file, would be preferable to remove this plib before installing plib CVS. CVS and rpm versions can cause conflicts. This is a problem with some distrubitions since rpm uses diferent directory structure than CVS, so, as a rule, before installing any CVS version, first remove rpm version for any program.
