Why? Short version: My son works for Microsoft and I hate WinXP. He plays games and showed a deep interest in 'simulators' when last he visited. Me, I'm a technical tinkerer and usually not interested in games and the like. [ Yet I play with this computer a lot! ]
So I thought I would try FlightGear out and test my skills in matters Linux.
So far I have had FG loaded but it 'freezes' at the "Loading Scene", though the default scene of a runway at night appears to have loaded.
All I can offer is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]$ ./fgfs Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". Initializing OpenAL sound manager open /dev/[sound/]dsp: Device or resource busy
I am able to close the window at this stage but am unsure of how to create a 'backtrace' so as to aid others in helping me solve my problems.
I'm running Mandrake10 Official having kept things up to date as required with urpmi. System is a PIII @ 733Hz ( 5 x 133 or somesuch ).
I do recall that I needed to install heaps of stuff to get the sound working with kde and think that this may be keeping the 'Device or resource busy'. I have no idea about Xlib: Just a wee bit over my head at present and I thought I was keeping things updated.
And a typical newbie thought. It appears that I need to be running GUI but does it need to be something somewhat lighter than kde in my case?
Someone here care to be patient and get me started using FG? At the very least I may get to learn something useful.
