(2) well, a quick look at input.cxx told me it's no magic, just plain old c++.2. mice.xml-like mode tag: I'm afraid the mode-tag in mice.xml has some built-in magic. At least I was not able to figure out how the mode-tag is connected to the .../mouse[n]/mode property. But any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic...
3. fallback solution if (1) or (2) does not work: creating a joystick-related mode property within xml and do some nasal where necessary
