Going back a while, I did see posts from a guy at NASA and one at Boeing who were interested in contributing to fgfs with a view of using it as part of their development work, perhaps these insiders could advise on the best approach to be made.

Perhaps I should just come to you for help in getting permission next time? =P

On a serious note, may be it will help if there is a person who can ask the aircraft manufacturers for data using FlightGear's name?

Companies like Airbus and Boeing are giant coporation. They probably don't have time reading E-mails sent by individuals (said so on their website too). I don't think the chance of me successfully obtaining data regarding their aircrafts will be too good.

One could of course still contact Boeing/Airbus (or any other a/c
manufacturer for that matter) and ask them for their explicit permission
to use performance data (taken from the AOM) within FlightGear, I have
also recently contacted a company and asked for a similar permission,
and it turned out not to be a problem at all ...

So, I would generally recommend not to be shy to ask - if you give a
general description of the project and needs, as well as possibly the
motivation for the inquiry you are unlikely to be rejected - at least
that's the experience that I have made.

Even though, asking for data to be made available under the GPL is a
whole different matter in most cases :-/
