Melchior,
I assume that the task falls into three parts:The idea is to have two new command line switches like
(1) --enable-nameplates (2) --disable-nameplates
and small yellow bars with the names of cities and town (maybe even lakes and rivers) lie in the center of the respective objects [...]
That's difficult to do. We don't have a database with all the coordinates and names (yet).
1) Get the geo data tupels "city name" with coordinates. Any commercial GPS handheld does this every day. So not principally a problem.
2) Integrate the city names into the Scenery data. Maybe as an "City name overlay" tarball as it is done with the airports. This would allow to update the terrain geo data without erasing the city names.
3) Add the code to display or not display the name plates.
I personally would start with point two. The wind socks on the airport tarmacs are kind of referenced. If someone with more interior knowledge of FG could advise me on how to get the text box with the letters on the name plate (= modified wind sock object) then I would volunteer to do some work to integrate that.
If not as an overlay tar ball then maybe as a perl script that performs a direct injection of the name plate wind sock object into the scenery xml files. This would eliminate the need for step three above.
Regards, Jrg
