..the frame rate drop from 600 to 78 was me maximizing glxgears 
from the default size to 1600x1152 (1200-48 KDE menu).

..with about one gig more of omph, your box should run in circles 
around mine, say 25-50fps at 1600x1200x32bpp on DRI drivers.
