It sure sound like a permissons problem. FWIW, I keep all my FlightGear files, including executables, in my home directory. Most users spend a lot of time editing XML files, rebuilding fgfs to incorporate updates, and tinkering with the models, so it's too inconvenient to keep any of it in root's space.
