Hi,
If feels a bit strange to post a message to other FlightGear users about a live Linux that we have been doing with scientific teaching purposes.
Yet, as a FlightGear lover, I have "bent" a bit our PAIPIX scientific/technical Linux for science teaching at the Universities and I have included FlightGear hoping to gain the students attention. It was kept more or less as an example until we could provide decent 3D support that we did only now in version 3.8 by using the unionfs file system.
Our knoppix based live linux PAIPIX (http://aamorimsrv.fis.fc.ul.pt/) was now also optimized to install automatically the ATI and NVIDIA proprietary driveers just by booting: (knoppix install=ati) or (knoppix install=nvidia).
This allows anyone to try FlightGear out of the live DVD.
We have tested it as far as we could but I am sure that we will get lots of comments if "real" users start to try it. Only the basic scenarios are included but the terrasync support could be used to connect to a remote scenario server (see the /usr/share/doc/flightgear/README.TerraSync).
If anybody knows of free resources for teaching mechanics and fluid mechanics with FlightGear just let me know and I will have a better excuse to put parts of the global scenery in the next version of the DVD.
All the best, Antnio Amorim
