Dene,

You need to start FG with c172p. Yes, looks like only
the 3D panel has a DME receiver. To the best of my
knowledge, the Cessna 172P Skyhawk is the most
advanced of all aircraft in FG (in that it has more
working navigation gear than others), followed by the
737. Don't know of any other aircraft that has working
navigation gear.

Just a moment ago.  I'd suggest using the Piper
Cherokee for VFR flight and the Cessna for having fun
in instrument meteorological conditions.
