Can I ask if this patch (or something similar) is going to be committed? I think it's quite important for end users (and also those of us helping newbie end users!) to get decent, useful error messages. I mean, I don't mind firing up strace when something goes wrong, but it's not something that the average user is going to be comfortable doing, I don't think.
