To check the joystick run js_demo and look at the very first line that is output. It should be the name of the joystick connected. I've also noticed that some of the names in the joystick xml files are named as (for example) 'Logitech Inc. WingmanXXXXX'. You need to make sure the names match exactly. It may mean that you need to get rid of Inc. or Logitech in some cases. I hope this helps.
