Sorry for being such a noob. I do not have experience with working in large
projects and using CVS.
Further on the webpage it mentions that one stay updated with the command i
mentioned above. This probable updates to development branches which are
probably just there to sync between developers and are not meant for those
who want to just have it working. It may be a nice idea to mention and or
noobs like me would fall prey easily.

Glad you are up and running. Just so you know, you can download the
latest source code release (such as SimGear-0.3.8.tar.gz) and then run
cvs update on that because the source code releases don't include all
the cvs tracking directories and files. You can only use cvs update on
a source tree that's been created with a cvs checkout command.
