I have found the problem. This may be useful for others. On that machine I
have two video cards, the GeForce and an old S3 with the desktop spread
across both screens. Turn off the second video card, and everything leaps to
life (logical).

Alas, that version dies at exactly the same instruction as the released
version. I have the dump if anyone is interested, but I'm not going to push
it.
