or make sure the ATC check box is enabled under the ATC->options menu.
You also need to have either of the comm radios tuned to a valid ATIS
station. Note that stations in the nav radio frequencies (< 118 or so)
can't currently be picked up in FG.

Thanks Dave, I'd hadn't made the association with ATC/ATIS (duh!!) These
acronyms are sometimes difficult to get a handle on for someone who hasn't
flown an actual plane or had any air training. Once you pointed out the
obvious is was a simple matter of searching preferences.xml for the right
properties and reset them back to true.
