I list this because that is what the FlightGear website FAQ says I should, I run Windows XP Pro SP2 on a P4 3.2MHz PC with 1 GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon 9600 video card. IOW, plenty of resources.
I downloaded the latest basic FlightGear installation file fgsetup-0.9.9.exe without difficulty. It went through the installation routine without a hitch.. But only a plain black screen appears after the program has gone through its opening indications )of loading aircraft, scenery objects, etc and after selecting aircraft type, San Francisco area airfield, time of day - I choose noon - etc. However, engine noise is audible ,which increases on advancing the joystick throttle. If I set runway lighting to full on SF International, then that is visible (at noon?!), I, of course am quite unable to fly without any visible reference cues. On quitting, I see a Windows command box which has been hiding under everything else, After some reference to certain files opening and "Reading electrical system module, the last line of the message is "WARNING; Legacy engine definition in YAS in configuration file. Please fix." That, of course, conveys no meaning for me. I looked in the FSGear folder in Program Files. The Scenery folder is empty and I could find no runfgfs.bat file (referred to somewhere on the website). The total size of the FSgear folder is 175 MB, which is much smaller than I would have expected, even for the basic program. I tried to download some scenery from the 10x10 grids on the relevant scenery download page. No response whatever from any grid. I'm wondering whether somebody who knows about these things might be kind enough to send me an e-mail advising what to do next. (I do not yet receive any of the relevant Lists.).
