Hi everyone,
This is my report of some success.
First let ne thank to all for a lot of helpful suggestions. Without this
community spirit, I would be
wrestling this for a looooong time.
As it turns out my problem had more than one facets:
1. My impression of altitudes in .stg file OBJECT lines being "above
ground level" was wrong. Was it ever like that in the history of FG?
Cause I was so sure that I read it in some FG doc/mail/google-found-snippet.
May be I was dreaming...
2. The object I measured as 320 units in blender, measured only 308 ft
in FG scenery. Allowing the imprecision of the measuring by having the
ufo at the base and then at the top, it is safe to conclude that 1
blender unit appears in FG scenery as 1 ft, not 1 meter. That combined
with (1) made my object invisible.
3. I also tried with various Scenery path options, and I think there is
some unexpected results there:
My FG_SCENERY=<myOwnSceneryDir with only
Objects>:<distributionSceneryDir with only what comes with FG
download>:<worldSceneryDir with full Objects+Terrain for many 10 degree
chunks Ottawa chunk w080n40 among them>
My new object is only in
myOwnSceneryDir it DOES NOT APPEAR
My new object is in both myOwnSceneryDir and worldSceneryDir it DOES
APPEAR
My new object is only in
worldSceneryDir it DOES APPEAR
FG_SCENERY=distributionSceneryDir:worldSceneryDir it
DOES APPEAR
It seems like without Terrain subdir Objects are being ignored, or
overwritten for the whole tile.
Melchior, if I understood you correctly, this behaviour is not what you
expect. Please let me know if you want me to experiment, collect logs
etc, to help futher investigate.
At this time I will stick with two part FG_SCENERY, because other than
playing exprimental objects what good myOwnSceneryDir for?
O.K. now I can go to bed, and have a good sleep without my object
appearing (or not) in my dream :-)
Thanks again for the good help you all have given. Much appreciated.
