Once upon a time Melchior taught me (could be via the IRC) that one can use the Magic Carpet FDM for the above. Handy for testing/learning the navs, too. Haven't used it in a while though; UFO is more intuitive for the scenery exploration/multiplayer observation. You just use the --fdm argument to substitute the underlying FDM, all the rest of the command line remains. I'm away from my GPU-equipped workstations ATM, so I can't verify that myself with the model placement candy around to see if it is what you are talking about.
